All WTO members are subject to EU - the benefits of trade liberalisation reach all workers and vulnerable communities. This action could be supported through further and more active cooperation between the WTO and the International Labour Organization. The EU should work with partners to further integrate this social dimension of globalisation into the work of the WTO. Trade Policy Reviews are an extremely valuable tool in the WTO’s transparency toolkit as they allow for a different type of discussion than other WTO meetings; being more holistic and focused at the same time. Trade Policy Reviews are an exercise, mandated in the WTO agreements, in which member countries' trade and related policies are examined and evaluated at regular intervals. Significant developments that may have an impact on the global trading system are also monitored.
For each review, two documents are prepared: a policy statement by the government under review, and a detailed report written independently by the WTO Secretariat. These two reports, together with the conclusions of the Chair of the Trade Policy Review Body, are published shortly after the meeting. The WTO provides a mechanism for member countries to resolve disputes among them related to the implementation of WTO trade agreements. The rules of this State-to-State dispute settlement mechanism are set out in the WTO Dispute Settlement Understanding.
